The Stalagmate drip logger records drop events, but not water flow volumes directly. In order to calculate discharge from drip rate data the volume of water drops under a given set of conditions needs to be known.

We have reviewed the literature and carried out new experiments on the relationships between water drop size, the geometry of roof straws and stalactite tips and drip rate. The relationship between drop mass and the radius of straws or solid stalactite tips is show below and this work is published in the Journal of Hydrology and may be downloaded by clicking on the image below.
